Launched: iFlash-Dual – The iPod dual SD adapter

Launched: iFlash-Dual – The iPod dual SD adapter

Proud to announce my latest product in the successful iFlash adapter range.

The iFlash-Dual, is a newly designed native SD adapter for the iPod. With the unique feature of allowing the use of 1 SD card or 2 SD cards in JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) mode.

There is no switch or adjustment, the iFlash-Dual seamlessly switches from single SD mode to Dual SD mode fully automatically. Just insert a second SD card and restore/sync the iPod to see the new enlarged capacity.

As the iFlash-Dual utilises JBOD you are free to mix your cards, it has even been engineered to allow the use of different makes and models together, to provide maximum flexibility : 256Gb + 256Gb to get a 512Gb iPod, or how about 64Gb + 256Gb to achieve 320Gb, and for those on a tight budget 64Gb + 128Gb for a 192Gb iPod, and many more combinations.

With smart power management you get the best runtimes even when running two SD cards, on average there is only 20% difference in runtimes between Single card use and Dual card use. Read my runtime/power consumptions article.

iPod and SD card compatiblity is the same as the existing iFlash-Bundle.

Shipping is scheduled to start from 1st October 2015.

No, the Kingston is in a 5th gen (and even then it won’t sync in rockbox mode, only in OF mode!). The 512 is two PNYs. I’ve definitely decided I prefer PNY to Kingston!

    @Tarkan
fair enough, obviously you are the one who knows about the costs and such. Partly its just that I have a 2600mah battery here and nothing I can use it for!

512gb dual ipod seems to be working (with rockbox and just over half full).

    Just a random thought –
Is there any milage in taking the all-in-one design of the dual sdxc adaptor and making a single sdxc adaptor one along the same lines?

I was just wondering if, as this combined approach seems to be more compact (as a bonus it means one less possible thing to come undone in the event of an impact/jolt) would a single-card version be compatible with the 2600mah battery sold by this guy (at present only usable for very particular ssd drives).

At first glance it looks as if it could possibly work – giving still more precious battery life!

@Pete – I have thought about it, but I believe we would be chasing after diminishing returns, price of the adapter would not actually change that much by dropping an SD slot, and not sure how much runtime you would gain 2000mAh vs. 2600mAh.

Amazing Tarkan! I guess that when using SDXC cards they need to be formatted the same way as in the previous iFlash (rebuilding MBR and so on). If eventually you want to replace one of the two cards, you’ll need to restore the whole iPod again, as there’s no way to know which file is in which card, I’m I wrong?

Anyway, thanks Tarkan for the great job! Can’t wait to get one

    1. Tarkan

@Joan – I don’t generally recommend rebuilding the MBR anymore, since the start of 2015 I have not seen any badly formed MBR’s on factory fresh cards – Yes when you introduce a new card or replace a card, as the iPod format and partition structure sits on SD1 – you have to restore using iTunes, so the revised ‘hard drive’ structure is updated and written to SD1.

@seguin The article states it reads both the SD cards (should you insert two) in JBOD (Just a Bunch of Drives) mode. In other words, it sees two SD cards as one single entity and combines their capacity. I don’t think the 6th gen itunea iTunes limitation has been solved with this adapter… But it would be nice if it was 😉

Thanks for the continued innovation, tarkan!

Might this Dual use adapter be a work around the 128Gb limitation for 6th Gen Ipods?
So two 128gb cards would be read independently as 128gb each rather than 256gb?

    1. Tarkan

@seguin – like @Shane stated, it will not get around the 6g LBA28 limitations, the SD cards appear as one drive to the iPod, the iPod is not aware of the underlying drive structure.

Loving the news of this dual card set up. Great job in improving this technology tarkan.

As for the gentleman who needed help with his ipods, I am located in Burbank California if I can be of assistance.

Keep up the great work tarkan!

Juan: The other fellow who responded was in West Covina — Burbank is a lot closer to Northridge. Drop me a note at faigin -at cahighways.org and we can discuss. I’m not planning on doing anything for a few months (although I can acquire parts).

  8. JOBAH

Thanks Tarkan for this great adapter…. I want to ask is it possible to make in future adapter with more than 2 SD card slots, 2 of them on each side of adapter….
    Best Regards

Now this is excellent! 256GB SD card costs £85-£90 at the moment. 2x 128GB is going to be pennies over £55 (depending on card), that’s a great saving and the JBOD feature means that you can upgrade incrementally should you need to (buy two 128GB cards, replace one with a 256GB card when the prices drop, and so on)!
    I’m in!

    1. Tarkan

@Pete – Actually in real life use the difference between running 1 SD card or 2 SD cards is less than 20%. Should have the republished power consumption data up soon.

  10. Pete

    Wow!
Congrats on continuing to improve the product!
2×256 is currently much cheaper than 1×512 so will probably give this a try.
How does it affect power consumption by the way?

    1. Daniel Faigin

@rubeN – Can you make a comment on my blog post on the mods at cahighways.org / wordpress / ?p=10579 (eliminate spaces) with information on how to contact you, so we can coordinate when I get ready to do the mods? Alternatively, drop me a note at faigin -at cahighways.org

I love all these modifications and eagerly look forward to the day I can get my iPods modified. The only problem is: I’m a software guy, not hardware. Would it be possible for you to build up a list of recommended vendors by location who have done these modifications and would be willing to do them for those that would supply parts (for a suitable service fee)? [I’m in Southern California]. There are some iPod repair shops around here, but I don’t know which ones know how to do this seamlessly.

[I can say that if you work up such a list, I’ll be glad to publicize it in my blog… where I’ve been writing for a while under the ipod tag about my worries about running out of space on my 160GB classic.]

    Whoa! Good job Tarkan!!!
I’m seriously hyped to give it a try!
Will it be possible to fit an 2000mah aftermarket battery in an gen 5.5 80gb model?

Cheers and thanks for your dedication!
